Five steps towards a healthier brain this decade

What's your 2030 Vision for optimising your brain health and boosting your performance?

2030 you might say?  Is this a typo?!  Not at all.  Rather than simply focusing on what you want to achieve this year, let's dream big. 

What's your vision for optimising your brain health and boosting your performance this decade?

If you could get in the best health ever this decade, boosting your performance in all that you do, what would that look like for you?...

What's your big dream?  Does it scare you?

If it doesn't, you're not dreaming big enough!

So what five steps can you take to help optimise your brain health and boost your performance this decade?

Are you prepared to stay the course?

Step 1.  Determine your why.

Why is it important to you that you optimise your brain health?  Why is it important to you that you boost your performance?  Why does it matter?

Determine your why and it's easier to stay the course.  Your why is that anchor for everything.

For me, my why is my daughter Lilly, shown in the photo.  From a brain health perspective I want to be there in mind, body and soul to celebrate her 60th birthday.  I will be 102.

It's well documented that dementia can start to manifest itself decades before you notice any symptoms.  I don't want to be that person that gets to the age where I say "I wish I'd ..." so I could be there another day for my daughter.

I don't want to be that person that knowingly fails to adopt the appropriate habits that increase my risk developing Alzheimer's disease, leaving my daughter prematurely without a mum.

From my brain scan in April 2019 I discovered I have moderate brain injury due to multiple minor knocks throughout my childhood and young adulthood.  This increases my risk of developing dementia.

I want to do everything I can to ensure I'm there for my daughter Lilly for as long as possible.  This is part of the spiritual circle of brain health coaching.

What's your why for you?  Why is it important you get in the best brain health for the long term?

Step 2.  Determine your 10 goals for the next decade, identifying your top three.

Once you've determined your why, it's really important to set clear goals for yourself, for your relationships, for your emotional, physical and spiritual health, for your work or study and for your finances.

What will your goals be for the next decade?  What do you want to accomplish?

  • What is important for your relationships?
  • What do you want to achieve from a work or study perspective?
  • What are your health and wellbeing goals?
  • How comfortable do you want to be financially?

Establishing clear goals is fundamental to helping you improve your brain health as it helps ground you, provides you with clarity on your desired direction of travel and helps you determine what behaviours will move you towards or away from your goals.

Be clear.  Be confident.  Be positive.

Step 3.  Determine what habits you need to establish and what habits you need to break to achieve your goals.

Will your behaviours over the last decade help you achieve what you want to accomplish in this decade?  Will your current behaviours help you achieve your desired goals (step 2)?

  • What behaviours do you need to change?
  • What habits do you need to develop and what habits do you need to break?
  • What help do you need to optimise your brain health, to reach that next level of performance and potential?
  • Do you have that support framework in place?
  • Do you have the right habits in place to get there?

Determine what habits you need to form and the steps you need to take to achieve this.

Step 4.  Decide how you want to feel.

Have you ever set goals for yourself, but just not become emotionally attached to those goals, so they feel to etherial - you're just not connected to them?  Consequently you've just not committed to them emotionally and hence not achieve them?

Fundamental to your success is your emotional connection to your why, your goals, your habits, your mission.

Our emotional mindset is the most mature part of our brain.  I like to call it the monkey mindset.  If we don't manage our monkey mindset, if we don't decide how we want to show up, it can easily take control of you, like your childlike mind throwing a tantrum and throwing you off course from achieving your goals.

So you have to learn how to manage your emotions.  This starts with deciding how you want to feel.

So how DO you want to feel this year?  How do you want to feel at the end of this decade?

Write down the three words, then write down why those words are important to you.  Connect those words back to your why (step 1), your goals (step 2) and your habits (step 3).

Step 5.  Establish what changes you need to make to your surroundings or how you view your surroundings.

Once you've determined how you want to feel, ask yourself this - are your surroundings helping you achieve your goals and dreams?  Do your surroundings help you feel better, perform better, be better?

Your surroundings can have a major impact on your brain health and performance.  Reviewing your surroundings in totality forms part of the biological and psychological circle of evaluation in brain health coaching.

What do you need to do to improve your surroundings?  This includes any exposure you have to toxins in your environment, use of electronic devices, electronic and personal clutter.  Making small changes to our surroundings can have a major impact on our brain health.
