Planning for Success
Feb 09, 2018Have you ever made those New Year's Resolutions and just not stuck to them? Or perhaps thought about them, but never really taken that first step to commit to them and get on the journey of change? Maybe you're great at setting personal New Year's resolutions, but neglect professional or social ones, or you've set your goals, but not established a way to track your progress towards achieving those goals?
The photo is of myself and my husband climbing Helvellyn this year in the Lake District. Our goal was to get to the top and back down safely to be able to tell the tale. The weather was against us and the environmental conditions challenging. Yet we achieved it and supported another person get safely down, who was mountaineering by themselves. So what three steps did we take and how can these be applied to any aspect of your life?
Step 1 - Decide
Decide what goal, project or dream is important to you. Ideally this should align with your core values, with what makes you unique and really fires you up. It's important that you dedicate time here to think so you can do a deep dive into your mind and identify what is important to you in life. Write this all down. Write down all your dreams and goals, including any existing ones and decide what aligns most with you and your values.
Step 2 - Plan
Plan out what you need to achieve that preferred goal or dream. This includes any support, resources and training. Be meticulous in your planning as the devil is in the detail. It's also really important that you maintain a holistic view of your plan - what you're committing yourself to, so that you don't bit off more than you can chew based on your other commitments and get dispondent.
Step 3 - Take action
It's time to take action. If you need support, ask for it, if you need training, reach out for it, if you need resources, get them. If you are not clear on what the end point will be or how to get there, frequently by taking that first step the way becomes clear. Don't put off taking that first step. You can't learn to walk until you try. Be courageous, be confident and be committed - and of course be sensible! Please don't go climbing that mountain without the appropriate equipment or guide to get you there intact!
