The most important intention you need to set at the beginning of the year

Jan 13, 2021

Many people spend the beginning of the year setting New Year’s resolutions, yet research shows that by February nearly half of New Year’s resolutions have fallen flat.

So how can you focus on being successful in your year?

It’s all about setting clear intentions, as well as goals and making sure you set the most important intention of all.

If you don’t do what I’m about to share with you, you are likely to be at the mercy of your emotions, struggling to navigate the sea of highs and lows as we sail through the waters of what will be another unpredictable year.

I’m Dr Ruth Mary Allan and I help leaders unchain their pain, unlock the secrets to greater mental clarity and performance and unleash their full potential by optimising their unique brain so they can more effectively lead their team and family to that next level in life.

Last year when I set this intention, I was able to use it as an anchor to go back to, to check in with myself and ask myself - is that the best version of me? Is that action, thought, behaviour, belief helping me?

By the end of the year I was able to say to refer back to this intention and evaluate myself subjectively and thank myself for the presence of mind.

You might be saying to yourself - not another intention. And I get it. Yet once you’ve defined this intention for yourself, the rest of them will fall into place.

So what is the intention?

Define how you want to show up for the year. Determine what three words constitute the best of year.

Last year these three words were:

  • Calm
  • Connected
  • Consistent.

Calm helped me navigated the rough waters. Connected was focused around building my growth network and connecting with those that could help me realise my goals and dreams. Consistent was for me showing up each day to serve my client, my family and myself.

This year my three words are:

  • Focused
  • Connected
  • Committed.

Focused on the task in hand, avoiding distractions that pull me away. Connected on a deeper, personal level with my clients and those that I support. Committed to the steps I need to take to move towards my goals and dreams.
