How to boost your mental clarity and performance

clarity distractions high performance mental clarity reshuffling Mar 16, 2021

Our mental clarity and performance in today's world is significantly less than it was 20 to 30 years ago.

This is being driven by the age of digitalization, the constant distractions that we're experiencing in today's world through social media, the news, that desire to always be on never be off. To always be accessible and with our mobile phone, being available all the time

All these extra distractions we never used to have before the digital age have crept into our life and made it really difficult for ourselves to get that mental clarity, to get that focus and to really elevate our performance to that next level.

We all thought at the beginning of the digital era that digitalization would bring us much greater scope for enhanced performance. This is not always the case. We are still adopting very similar working practises that we had before the digital age, yet we've got all of this additional distraction on top that is weighing us down.

We’re just not designed from an evolutionary perspective to cope with the volume of distraction that we're experiencing today.

The consequences of this are vast. We’re seeing increased work-related stress, highlighted as the number one epidemic of the 21st century by the World Health Organization.

We're seeing increases in mental health issues, particularly depression and anxiety, and suicide rates are all on the rise in the younger generation as well. We are experiencing overwhelming fatigue.

All of these struggles increase our risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, which does not currently have a cure.

So what can we do about it?

My name is Dr Ruth Mary Allan. I'm a certified brain health and high-performance coach and certified Havening Techniques practitioner. I help people unchain their pain, unlock the secrets to greater mental clarity and performance and unleash their full potential by optimizing their unique brain.

I’m always looking for opportunities to improve both my own and my client’s mental clarity and performance. It's been particularly difficult during this pandemic because we're all working and living in the same place.

In fact, we're not working from home. For many our home has become our workplace. We’re living in our office and that makes it particularly challenging to get the mental clarity and the performance that we seek to work effectively and without undue stress.

So what can we do?

Hack 1: Reshuffling

What I found really transformative very recently was simply reshuffling what we do within our day and how we approach our day.

So I'm a mum with a young daughter who fortunately is able to go to nursery. What used to happen when she came home from nursery is we would feed her. Then we would put her to bed, which we’d do together.

Then we would cook the dinner and feed ourselves. By the time we’d finished cooking, it would be eight o'clock in the evening and we'd hardly have any time for ourselves.

We'd be eating very late into the evening and that wouldn't give us the ideal time to have that rest in our body and our brain to process the food that we consumed to give us a fasting time that's optimal for our brain health.

So we decided to shift our eating time to our daughter's eating time. We eat much earlier - between 5-5.30pm. Either my husband or I prepare the food in the afternoon, which gives us much more time in the evening time to do our own thing. I do lose some time in the afternoon, but it allows me to shift that work time to the evening, which is fine.

Doing this gives us much more quality time together as a couple before we go to bed.

Hack 2: No mobile phone in the bedroom

We now don't allow the use of any mobile phone in the bedroom. Although a common suggestion, it took a long time for us properly implement. It makes a huge difference as a couple as it allows us to just focus on each other in the bedroom without any distractions to draw our attention away.

What's important for you to give you that greater mental clarity and performance and really to let go of all of the distractions and to push them aside. So what steps can you take to really help yourself?

You might say to yourself, I don't have the time. It needs to be a quick fix.

I get that.

Many of the steps you can take are very quick fixes. By adopting tiny, micro habits, these simple steps can make a huge difference in your mental clarity and performance if you do them on a consistent basis.

Step 1: Define what mental clarity

Define what mental clarity and enhanced performance means for you. What would that look like for you if you had much greater mental clarity and if your performance was elevated? Write it down!

Step 2: Distractions

Write down all of the distractions in your current life that keep getting in your way. Distractions from a physical perspective. Distractions from a time perspective. Distractions from an environment or surroundings perspective. Look at all of the things that get in your way from having that mental clarity that you so crave.

Step 3: Create a distraction free space and time.

What do I mean by this?

Dedicate a free space and a free time that you can really focus on having that mental clarity that you need to do the things that are important to you, to reflect and to think clearly. This could be a dedicated space in your house, going outside for a walk in nature, a dedicated time to focus on you when others are asleep, or using music to drown out any other noise distractions.

To help you shift yourself to that next level of performance and potential in your life, to that next level of mental clarity, away from all of those distractions, it is vital that you dedicate distraction free time and space.

If you are constantly struggling with creating the right conditions for you to enhance your mental clarity and performance, and continue to be easily distracted, you could have an underlying brain health condition, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

There is hope.

I work with clients with conditions such as ADD and equip them with the appropriate tools and techniques to help them boost their mental clarity and performance.
